The 1881 Census
The 1881 Census was taken on the night of April 3rd. Family historians often have their first census encounter with the 1881 as it is widely available in transcribed form from many websites. Unfortunately for us there is a page missing within the images of the enumerator's book on every website that we know of. As far as we can tell it simply got missed when the original digitisation process was undertaken. We have made representation to 'the powers that be' but, being only a small group, it is unlikely that much will come of it in the present economic climate. By the time of this census the layout of the roads towards the village centre had all been set, most of the housing - both large and small - existed and Oatlands Drive had established itself as the commercial centre of the village although there were other shops and businesses in St Mary's Road *which was renamed from Ball's Road around this time) and all the pubs were now up and running with the exception of the Working Men's Club, which opened in 1885, and the 'Beer House' which had, by then, ceased to trade.
